SUMMARY OF TRAINING PROGRAMMES
Roll Back Malaria in Emergencies
Training Workshop
Summary
The MENTOR Initiative was established in October 2002. It was chosen by the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Secretariat as the institutionalising partner for it’s 7-day intensive field training package for ‘Roll Back Malaria in Complex Emergencies’. MENTOR now regularly implements this field training programme for international and national agency teams in emergency affected regions. The training programme is implemented over 7 days in emergency field sites and also over 5 days in Europe and USA.

Based upon the RBM Inter-agency Handbook on Malaria Control in Complex Emergencies , the workshop provides international partners with up-to-date standardised technical guidance on how to assess, design, implement, monitor and evaluate effective malaria control strategies as part of their overall emergency health response.

Course Outline:

The course will run for 7 or 5 consecutive days. It will be taught by core MENTOR staff and outside experts from a variety of relevant fields. The course is designed to be highly participatory, with a problem-based approach to teaching and learning. Throughout the workshop, all participants will be encouraged to actively take part and to share their different experiences and lessons learned. Various teaching methodologies will be used including lectures, problem solving exercises, case scenarios, role plays and practical demonstrations (including practice with confirmatory diagnostics - rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and microscopic examination - , insecticide residual spraying and survey methodology).

The course will cover the following 9 modules:

An overview of malaria in complex emergencies
Initial assessment and planning
Surveillance and monitoring, case management
Prevention
Community participation and health education
Training of staff and the community
Operational research
Development of action plans for rolling back malaria

(for more information please refer to the workshop agenda)

Participants will receive a range of training materials during the course of the workshop, including a participant’s workbook and facilitator’s guide, the RBM Interagency Handbook on Malaria Control in Complex Emergencies, relevant WHO manuals and public health CD-ROMs and a CD of all training materials and presentations used.

Target audience:

-The 7 day field based course targets those who are directly responsible for implementation, or support, of emergency public health programmes, e.g. programme co-ordinators, medical co-ordinators, training officers, local authority counterparts, UN staff and field representatives of donor agencies.

-The 5 day course targets HQ and regional based managers responsible for organisation policy and technical support programme design.

The course provides a valuable opportunity to standardise the knowledge and skills of emergency partners and to promote strong co-ordination and harmonised strategies between agencies. Regular implementation of the RBM training workshop will create a network of national and international emergency health personnel who have received standardised, up to date technical guidance and training in malaria control in emergencies, based upon consensus of international experts.
